MECCA "Master The Art Of Makeup"

Here’s why it so d*mn good:

Chris Ullens’ stop-motion film for MECCA…

Man, it’s such a good reminder of what happens when craft meets vision.

Every frame feels obsessed over—in the best possible way. There’s real personality in how things move, rhythm in the edit, and a little story in every product reveal. It makes you stop and appreciate it.

And as someone who runs a team who works in CG, I find it super inspiring.

The goal isn’t to mimic stop motion—it’s to bring that same love of movement, to not shy away from imperfections, but bring a f*ck ton of soul, into a different medium.

Different tools, same obsession with making it feel great.

Techniques?

All stop motion. Shot frame by frame with real products, real sets, and hand-timed choreography. The same magic can be crafted in CG, with more control, fewer constraints, and infinite possibilities.

What's Missing?
This could have hit harder.

This is a tough one.

Because honestly this is work is crème de la crème. The whole film is super grabby. But, if I could nitpick on something.. it would be the opening shot.

I think there is something in how the eyes in the poster in the first frame comes "to life" that feels strange and fun in an interesting way.

I wish that happened in second 2, not 4 or 5.

Second 1: Eyes freeze frame
Second 2: Quick push-in: eyes look and lock on you in extreme close up.

I imagine an uncomfortable strange moment that steals the mind.

Next Saturday
What's in store?

I have some incredible work in my swipe file for brand and product motion. Next week I will share a piece of pharma inspired brand film, that will knock your G*DD*M socks off.

I hope you're ready.
See you then.

Have a lovely Saturday.
